I haven't played any online shooters since Halo 2, but I came across this out in the ether. It sure must suck to see a game completely gutted of functional dedicated-server online modes for the sake of keeping pirates out of multiplayer games.for less than a week.
At the same time, the argument can be made that sales (and piracy) of games like MW2 are extremely front-loaded around a given release date. If pirates can't play at launch then they are far more likely to just buy a legitimate copy of the game they want. Keeping pirates out of the picture for even a few days can perhaps translate into tens of thousands of extra sales. At the same time, it's difficult to say how many sales were lost when it was announced that PC MW2 would not support dedicated servers. So was it worth it? I think it's probably safe to say that it's a hack that will be countered by IW.net expediently, but there will probably be a continual back-and-forth cat-n-mouse game played by developers/hackers for some weeks to come. I've got to imagine that ultimately the pirates will win though, after sniffing enough network packets to create a server emulator.I guess it depends on how much time someone is willing to put into it though.
