A total of six volumes were published by between June 3, 2009 and November 4, 2011. The anime only season follows the leaf ninjas attempting to stop the Three-Tails.On January 2, 2009 and began providing Naruto: Shippuden episodes. The English dub of the season aired for on July 30, 2011. Episodes 89 to 98 were broadcast until the show was removed from Disney XD's schedule, citing the more frequent violence shown later on in the anime.
The season premiered on starting with episode 99 from December 29, 2012 to January 7, 2013. The season would fully air on English television on 's programming block from February 13 to May 14, 2016.
The first twelve episodes were collected in a DVD box by Viz Media on October 11, 2011. Additionally, collected the first episodes alongside the last ones from the previous season on November 7, 2011 in a 2-disc DVD set in the United Kingdom.The season uses five musical themes: two opening themes and three ending themes. 'Closer' by is used as the opening theme for episodes 89-102. It is replaced in episode 103 by 'Hotaru no Hikari' ( ホタルノヒカリ, 'Glow of Fireflies') from.
The first ending theme is 'Long Kiss Good Bye' by used only for the first two episodes. ( バッチコイ!!!, 'Bring It On!!!' ) by was used as the ending for episodes 91-102.
It is replaced in episode 103 with 'Shinkokyū' ( 深呼吸, 'Deep Breath'). Naruto is reunited with Jiraiya, who offers to train with him again. As the events occurred, Kabuto relays Orochimaru's message for Guren carry a mission and she initiate a death battle among the experimental subjects in her care with the survivors to be her subordinates. But after returning home, Naruto learns that neither Gamakichi nor Gamatatsu can use Water Style ninjutsu. But Yukimaru falls ill on their way to meet with her group and Guren is forced to spend the night in a cabin. In the morning, Guren finds Yukimaru playing an instrument that his mother gave him. As a war council gets underway at the Leaf Village in preparation for the battles ahead, the toads on Mt. Myoboku discuss whether or not to listen to Jiraiya's insistence on giving Naruto the key to his Tetragram Seal - which keeps the Nine-Tails in check - as well as the possible repercussions if they do so. The Great Lord Elder requests Naruto's presence to look at his future before making his final decision on the matter. What will the Great Lord Elder see, and what will it ultimately mean for Naruto? As Naruto rests following his hyperventilating episode, he thinks back to what led Sasuke down the path of darkness, and how Sasuke accused him at their battle in the Final Valley of not truly understanding how he felt. Naruto remembers how devastated he was when Jiraiya died at the hands of Pain, and resolves to go and confront Sasuke once more, this time with the ability to relate to Sasuke's pain.
Will Naruto finally be able to get through to Sasuke and save him from the darkness that is rapidly consuming him? After saving Sasuke, Madara sends him and Karin away and decides to talk to the remaining Kage. After telling them about Project Moon's Eye, Madara demands that Naruto and Killer Bee be handed over to Akatsuki, which the Kage refuse to do. What will Madara's reaction be?
Meanwhile, Sakura, Kiba, Sai, and Lee depart from the Hidden Leaf Village and head to the Land Of Iron, with Sakura determined to face Naruto regarding a certain matter. What sort of exchange will take place between the two?
