The rest of the procedure detailed below explains how to make the Custom CD - which adds the necessary 'bits and pieces' to that Custom CD that you require to connect to your Target Drive using the USB3 protocol.3.

Thus, for you to add the required USB3 drivers to that CD, you require an install fileset from your USB3 Chipset Manufacturer suitable for use with Windows Vista. Even if you are running Windows 7 on your machine - you still require the support files for Windows Vista to make a workable Bootable Ghost Version 15 Recovery CD with USB3 support.5. So, in order to obtain those files, the first thing you have to know is which USB3 chipset is used by either your Laptop, Motherboard or Addin-Card.

You get this info from Device Manager. Open Device Manager and navigate to the USB Controller section of the Device Manager tree. Expand that section and look for your USB3 controller. In the info provided, should be the name of the manufacturer of your USB3 chipset. Common examples are Renesas and NEC.6.

Now, off you go to your laptop or motherboard or addin-card manufacturer's website to obtain the proper download used for Vista by your USB3 chipset. It may also be possible to obtain the proper drivers from the USB3 chipset manufacturer's website. Google and Bing are your friends here. Once you have the driver package, unpack it and find the subfolder that references the Vista version of the install files. You are looking for the appropriate Vista installation INF file for your USB3 chipset. Make note of the Drive and foldername where that info is located.8.

Now, start the process of making the Custom CD - using the info provided in Item 3. When the time comes to add the appropriate support - check to see if the Custom CD Wizard understands how to use the USB3 stuff already present in your Windows 7 installation.a) If so, you will see that item already added to the list detailed in Step 8 on the 'Creating a Custom Symantec Recovery Disk in Norton Ghost 15' webpage.b) If not, use the Add function and browse to the folder where you have the Vista version of the USB3 drivers. When you select the INF file for the USB3 drivers in that folder - the Custom CD Wizard should populate the 'Custom Drivers to Add' List with your USB3 chipset drivers.9. Complete the rest of the steps detailed in the Custom CD Wizard, using the info on the 'Creating a Custom Symantec Recovery Disk in Norton Ghost 15' webpage.10. Burn the Custom CD and Save the Custom CD ISO Image so you can make additional disks in future if desired - without having to go through all this hassle a second time.11. Hook up your USB3 Drive to your USB3 Port, boot to your Custom version of the Norton Ghost Version 15 Recovery CD - and see if your USB3 Drive is available as an External Disk in the Source or Target Option of Norton Ghost Version 15 running from the Custom CD.12.

If so, you're IN! Now, check your work. Do a test-backup of a small number of files. Do a test-restore of that backup - restoring to a different location. Do a file-compare of the two sets of files to confirm they are bit-for-bit identical to each other.Note: You do not just assume that because you can see and read/write to the USB3 drive - that all is well with the world.

Things aren't right until you have verified that what you put into the backup - is what comes out of the restore. Finding out that this is not the case - after-the-fact - when you are depending upon a Restore to save your bacon - is a really really really bad idea.13. If things don't work, you have one more option to try.

If you used the automatically-populated option for the USB3 drivers copied from your Windows 7 installation - these may not work. Go back and do the whole process over again. Make sure you deselect the drivers automatically detected by the Custom CD Wizard - and manually add the Vista USB3 drivers from the location you noted in Step 7 of this guide.14. Complete the rest of the Wizard, burn the Custom CD, and test your second effort - following the same procedure as detailed in Steps 9 through 12 of this guide.15.

Your final task is to do a Ghost Backup of your entire drive to something other than the USB3 Disk. Then do another backup of your entire drive to the USB3 disk. Finally, restore your Boot Partition (C:) using the USB3 Disk as your source. Cross your fingers, and boot using the restored image. Test to make sure that Windows runs normally using the image sourced from the USB3 Drive. If it doesn't, restore from the safety image you made to the non-USB3 device.16. If you have subsidiary Partitions such as a Data Partition (D:) or a Games Partition (E:) you do the same procedure with those Partitions as detailed in Item 15 for the Boot Partition (C:).

If all works well, now you have verified you actually have a procedure that works and will totally-and-completely save your bacon when you need it toCome back and let us know how you made out. Also, please share your source-location and driver-download info for your particular USB3 Chipset.

Thus, wasting a few blank CD-Rs is going to be required regardless.Another point: The ISO Download referenced above will make a Ghost 15 SP1 SRD. This is not the same bird as an SRD embedded in an older Ghost 15 pressed CD. There are bugfixes in that SP1 SRD that are unavailable to people using an old SRD and loading USB3 drivers into that environment.My understanding is that a version of Ghost that has been Live-Updated to the latest available will also 'build' an SRD with those bugfixes embedded. Sounds reasonable to me, if the driver doesn't work don't waste your time building a custom disk.I don't have a USB3 device but I actually tried to build a build a disk for it when I was trying to help someone else here.Every single driver I found based on the NEC USB3 chipset couldn't even be used, Ghost would give an error about unsupported driver and not let you build the disk.Just plug the darn thing into a USB 2 port for recovery.

That being said, I recommend downloading the latest Ghost SRD from the link you provided. The bug fixes to the SRD were very minor and it is still built on the same WinPE 2.1, so getting USB 3.0 to work is going to be the same challenge. There is still at least 2 major bugs that has not been fixed anyway.1.

Since it is a Zip file you can use Windows Explorer or other utility to extract the files you need. You need the folder named INFFiles along with it's subfolders. Once you have that folder, put it on a UFD (USB Flash Drive) or somewhere that you can browse to from the Recovery Environment.Start the Ghost SRD, click Utilities Load a driver.

Then load both asmthub3.inf and asmtxhci.inf files. Test out your USB 3 drive. I added a USB 3.0 drive recently and now am having problems. It keeps passing the Seagate tests, so I've switched it to a new computer and now Ghost won't back up with it (Windows 7-64 bit, SSD boot drive, several new things - I wasn't sure what was causing the problem). After 45 minutes on a chat / remote control sessions with Norton Support this morning they disabled the drive error warnings.

After getting off the chat I searched for the USB 3.0 issue and found this discussion, which is different from disabling the drive error warning messages. I'm glad I found this.I think I'm going to use my older USB 2.0 external drive to make backups to, then copy the old ones to my new USB 3.0 drive and just use that for archive purposes. If I ever need to recover, I may have to copy the files from the USB 3.0 drive to the older USB 2.0 drive to get recovered. But it seems like that would be a foolproof way to make it all work.
